Press Tab to Move to Skip to Content Link The Small Business Development Center (SBDC) Agribusiness Advisor works with entrepreneurs in the broad field of agriculture, agribusinesses, partners, stakeholders, and fellow SBDC team members to develop and grow agribusinesses across the state of Indiana. Duties include conducting trainings, advising agribusiness clients, and representing the Indiana SBDC Agribusiness Initiative via meetings, conferences, and events. Externally, the role includes outreach and promotion while internally the Agribusiness Advisor will work with the entire SBDC Agribusiness Initiative team to aid client growth efficiently and professionally. The entirety of the program exists to consult agriculture-based businesses. Success in this role will be measured by increases in brand awareness, referrals, training events, and the achievements of the unit's clientele.

  • Regularly collaborate with defined and prospective partners to support and grow the Agribusiness Initiative across the state of Indiana -
  • Develop and manage relationships with agricultural organizations as an active partner in developing agribusinesses across the many genres of agriculture
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with partners to strengthen our referral network
  • Represent the Indiana SBDC Agribusiness Initiative at events promoting Ag entrepreneurship -
  • Identify gaps in the Ag entrepreneurial ecosystem and provide recommendations to fill them
  • Work with local partners to identify entrepreneurial training needs
  • Provide training to entrepreneurs looking to start or grow their business
  • Coordinate in-person and virtual training events
  • Create marketing strategy for events
  • Maintain training event data in accordance with state & SBA standardsAgribusiness Advising -
    • Meet one-on-one with Agri-entrepreneurs to guide them to the right resource or mentor at the right time in their journey
    • Assist clients in business plan development, marketing, operations, running market reports, and finding financing
    • Maintain records and notes of client contacts
    • Aid the specialty agribusiness advisors (Extension and State Dept of Ag employees) on the team with client maintenance, correspondence, follow-up, and record keepingOperations -
      • Identify and amplify success stories -
      • Aid in the development of mandatory reporting required by the state, university, and partners -
      • Administrative and data-related tasks to measure impact -
      • Regularly meet with the Agribusiness Initiative director and team
      • Coordinate connectivity between specialty advisors and clients
      • Meet Professional Development GoalsQualificationsRequired:
        • Bachelor's Degree in a relevant field
        • Three (3) years of work experience within the ag industry. Experience must include some relevancy in one or more of these fields: -
        • Agribusiness, Ag Production, Ag Manufacturing, Ag Education, Ag Finance, or Ag Lending
        • Team player - willing to coordinate, collaborate, and cooperate with others
        • Goal-oriented with strong project execution capabilities -
        • Calendaring - maintain a calendar to sustain multiple daily meetings
        • Professional tact
        • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build relationships with multiple stakeholders -
        • Flexible hours to accommodate clients across the state
        • Experience teaching, coaching, or mentoring -
        • Active listener and skilled in asking thoughtful, probing questions -
        • Ability to connect with all levels of the agribusiness development environment, from layperson and novice to highly educated and technical
        • Build and maintain trust
        • Strong speaking and writing skills -
